In 1997, to celebrate the model's silver anniversary, Royal Oak released the first Royal Oak Tourbillon. The new Royal Oak Selfwinding Flying Tourbillon is a contemporary take on the design from the late 90s, using the same 41mm case. Attention all AP reference nerds: these models debut Audemars Piguet's new galvanic growth 18k gold brand signature, which was previously reserved for the lacquered dials of the Code 11.59 family. The brand claims this process is similar to 3D printing.

The steel 26530ST model stands out among the three references because to its distinctive dial, which has a tappisserie design radiating from the tourbillon's centre and a brilliant blue colouring. The 26530OR model in gold also features a same dial style, but in smoked grey. At last, the titanium 26530TI breaks away with its stunning yet subtle sandblasted slate grey dial. The 26530TI's titanium case and bracelet seem to complement each other splendidly, creating a subtle background for a highly showy complexity.

The Royal Oaks' impressive functionality is provided by the Audemars Piguet Calibre 2950, an autonomously wound movement with a tick rate of 3 Hz and a power reserve of 65 hours. This movement keeps the hands moving and the tourbillon spinning. Flying tourbillons are a signature complication for Audemars Piguet, and the 2950 was initially introduced in the Code 11.59 series. These tourbillons are distinguished by the absence of an upper (dial side) tourbillon bridge. Fluttering tourbillons, which are attached to the mechanism's underside by means of an arbor, provide an improved vantage point from which to observe the animated function in motion. If you're going to shell out cash for a tourbillon, you may as well be able to admire its magnificent movement, which is a major selling point, right?

Seeing these Royal Oaks in metal is the only way to appreciate them, and I can't wait to see live photographs and wrist shots (particularly of the titanium version) when the fortunate new owners take possession of these surely unique timepieces. Prices are said to be "available upon request," but AP must have known I wasn't qualified to be a buyer because I never really requested. I guess I shouldn't get too near the sun, tourbillon or not.
